Marine heatwaves at high latitudes: Tools for tracking and supporting fisheries resilience

The 2026 Wakefield Fisheries Symposium will bring fishery researchers, managers, and other professionals together to share knowledge, experience, and learn about marine heatwaves at high latitudes. This interactive symposium will explore the impacts of extreme warming events on high-latitude fisheries and highlight tools and strategies to build resilience in fishery management. Participants worldwide are invited to share case studies so that we can compare approaches across regions and learn from each other.

Abstracts are invited on three themes related to marine heatwaves at high latitudes.

  • Theme 1: The Big Picture—Climate, Oceanography, and Ecosystem Dynamics
  • Theme 2: Species Responses—Case Studies of Heatwave Impacts
  • Theme 3: Managing in a Changing Ocean—Adaptive Strategies for Resilience.

See the call for abstracts for more information.

About the Wakefield Fisheries Symposium series

The Alaska Sea Grant College Program has been sponsoring and coordinating the Lowell Wakefield Fisheries Symposium series since 1982, in partnership with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center, the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, and the North Pacific Research Board.

These meetings are a forum for information exchange in biology, management, economics, and processing of various fish species and complexes, as well as an opportunity for scientists from high-latitude countries to meet informally and discuss their work.

Alaska Sea Grant accommodation and code of conduct

Accommodation requests related to a disability should be made at least five business days in advance to sea.grant@alaska.edu.
