Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit returns to Juneau

The 11th Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit is set for January 20–22, 2026, at Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall in Juneau. The Alaska Sea Grant event provides commercial fishermen who are early in their careers intensive training, valuable information and opportunities to build their networks.

AYFS develops capacity and leadership within the next generation of Alaska’s commercial fishing industry. Participants engage with industry experts and fellow fishermen, gaining practical knowledge of business management, fisheries policy and Alaska seafood’s role in the global economy.

“We designed the summit to support Alaska’s commercial fishing businesses so they can continue supporting coastal communities,” said Gabe Dunham, Alaska Sea Grant’s fisheries specialist. “With help from the fishing industry and our partners, AYFS helps new skippers develop skills and grow businesses that will keep Alaska’s fishing industry strong for the future.”

Timed to coincide with the start of the Alaska State Legislature’s regular session, AYFS also offers participants a firsthand look at the policy-making process that shapes their livelihoods.

Established in 2007 by the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program, the summit has helped over 500 early-career fishermen become leaders in the Alaska commercial fishing industry. AYFS is part of Alaska Sea Grant’s ongoing commitment to workforce development and the long-term health of Alaska’s fishing communities. For details and to register, visit the Alaska Young Fisheries Summit event page.
