Theresa Peterson to keynote Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit
Alaska Sea Grant will host the ninth Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit (AYFS) from December 6–9. Theresa Peterson will provide the keynote address. Peterson is an active subsistence and commercial fisherman and long-time resident of Kodiak. Her experience includes pot fishing, set netting, seining, drift netting, longlining, and jigging. She is the Fisheries Policy Director at Alaska Marine Conservation Council and has served on several fishery boards and councils, including the North Pacific Fishery Management Council. She is an advocate for small-boat independent fishing businesses, and young fishermen.

Since 2007, AYFS has provided training for commercial fishermen just starting their careers. It brings young fishermen together with leaders in the industry to teach business skills, the fisheries management process, and other topics of importance for the Alaska seafood industry.
The event will be held online with a modified agenda and a low registration fee, in response to COVID-related health and safety concerns.
Each evening of the Summit will take place on Zoom, beginning with an optional drop-in session at 5:00 pm, where participants can network and ask questions. The educational components of the event will run two hours each evening starting at 6:00 pm. Each session is designed to build on the next and will cover business management, the fisheries regulatory process, and the long-term sustainability of Alaska commercial fisheries.
