Now hiring: Education Specialist

Alaska Sea Grant is recruiting for an Education Specialist. This is a 9-month full-time, term University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF) faculty position to be based in an Alaska rural coastal community such as, but not limited to, Bethel, Dillingham, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Nome, or Valdez.

The education specialist will create, deliver, and assess educational materials and programs that address relevant, critical and emerging issues; provide training and professional development for formal and informal educators in marine and environmental literacy; coordinate with local, state, and national educational networks, including the National Sea Grant network; and facilitate and support engagement activities by Alaska researchers. The faculty member joins a great team of Marine Advisory Program agents and specialists located across Alaska who work collaboratively to enhance the sustainable use and conservation of Alaska’s marine and freshwater resources through research, outreach, and extension. 

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Master’s degree in education, marine science, ecology, oceanography or related field
  • Experience developing and adapting curriculum materials, lesson plans and other educational resources to meet federal and Alaskan educational standards and reflect current science research to engage students and the public
  • The ability to effectively communicate complex scientific topics and content to a diverse audience using a variety of tools (e.g., print, web, video)
  • An understanding of scientific methods and ecological processes, especially as they apply to Alaskan waters and coastlines, and the ability to apply this expert knowledge to the development of educational material
  • Knowledge of teacher training, effective pedagogy, and trends in STEM education programs
  • Experience working in rural and/or with Alaska Native communities or populations in Alaska
  • Experience working with diverse cultures and knowledge systems
