Oyster Hatchery and Nursery Training

This three-day workshop will provide an introduction to the early life stages of oysters, including the techniques necessary for running a shellfish hatchery for commercial, research, or restoration purposes. The training will take place at the OceansAlaska Hatchery in Ketchikan, and participants will work with hatchery staff and instructors from the University of Alaska Southeast and Alaska Sea Grant on hands-on activities such as oyster spawning, microalgae counting, and seed sorting.

Other topics covered will include:

  • Basic biology/anatomy including dissection
  • Microalgae production techniques
  • Spawning
  • Larval rearing
  • Seed setting
  • Site selection and water quality
  • Land-based nursery rearing
  • FLUPSY production

Space is limited to twelve individuals and applications are required. While all are welcome to apply, preference will be given to Alaska residents and active oyster farmers. The workshop fee is $50, and travel and lodging for participants will be covered. Apply online by February 13, 2026.
