Oyster Farm Operations Workshop

Alaska Sea Grant invites applications for a three-day Oyster Farm Operations Workshop on Prince of Wales Island.

This workshop will give new and prospective oyster farmers comprehensive training on the production of high-quality Alaska oysters.

The workshop will include visits to farms with various cultivation techniques, and provide an opportunity to network with farmers and ask questions.

Topics covered will include:

  • growout gear, including FlipFarm, OysterGro, rafts, trays, and more
  • FLUPSY operation and management
  • biofouling control
  • oyster quality and handling, including various options for tumbling and sorting oysters
  • farm inventory and growth tracking
  • biosecurity

Space is limited to ten people, and applications are required. Applications are open to all, with priority given to Alaskans new to shellfish farming or in the process of starting a farm. Upon acceptance, a $200 deposit is required, fully refunded after successful completion of the course. Travel, room, and board for participants will be covered with support from the Alaska Mariculture Cluster.

For full consideration, apply before July 10. Applications received after that date will be reviewed on a rolling basis, as seats are available.
