PADI Open Water Diver Course for Mariculturists
September 14 – September 17 AKDT
9:00 am — 5:00 pm each day

Alaska Sea Grant is now accepting applications for a PADI Open Water Diver certification course designed for individuals working in or preparing to enter Alaska’s mariculture industry.
Before arriving in Kodiak, participants will complete the required PADI online coursework independently. A link to the course materials will be provided upon acceptance. Participants must finish all online coursework before the in-person training begins.
The in-person portion of the course will include:
- Confined-water skill development in a pool
- Proper use of scuba equipment
- Diving safety and emergency procedures
- Open-water training dives in Kodiak
- Practical skills relevant to working safely in and around mariculture operations
Participants who successfully complete the online coursework, confined-water sessions, and required open-water dives will earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification.
Space is limited, and an application is required. Priority will be given to Alaska residents who are actively involved in mariculture or whose work would benefit from scuba certification. Applicants should be comfortable in the water and able to meet PADI’s medical and swimming requirements.
The course fee is $200 per participant, and all required diving equipment will be provided. Limited travel scholarships are available and will be awarded through the application process.
Additional information about scheduling, required forms, travel support, and payment will be provided to accepted participants.
Apply by August 5, 2026.
