Alaska Sea Grant is now accepting applications for a three-day, hands-on kelp nursery workshop in partnership with GreenWave. The training will be held at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center utilizing the GreenWave containerized kelp nursery.

Designed for current and prospective nursery technicians, kelp farmers, nursery operators and others working in mariculture, the workshop will introduce participants to the equipment, techniques and biological principles involved in producing seeded line for kelp farming.

Topics will include:

• Kelp biology and reproductive cycles
• Collection and preparation of reproductive tissue
• Nursery equipment, setup and sanitation
• Spore release and seeded-line inoculation
• Nursery culture and maintenance
• Monitoring seeded line and troubleshooting common challenges
• Preparing seeded line for transfer and deployment at a farm site

Participants will gain practical experience working in a functioning containerized nursery and learn approaches that can be adapted for kelp production in Alaska.

Space is limited and participation is by application. The workshop fee is $50. There are limited travel scholarships available for approved applicants.
