SUMMARY:Alaska Aquaculture Permitting Portal and Guidance
DESCRIPTION:Join Alaska Sea Grant for a 1-hour webinar to talk about the newly launched Alaska Aquaculture Permitting Portal website and companion guidance booklet. \nCurrent and prospective aquatic farmers in Alaska have a valuable new resource to guide them through submitting\, amending\, renewing or transferring an aquatic farm application. NOAA Fisheries Alaska Region and Alaska Sea Grant have launched a web portal and printable guidance document to assist applicants through the aquatic farm leasing and permitting process in Alaska. \nReleased in time for the 2022 application cycle\, the website and manual have been developed with input and oversight from state and federal permitting agencies\, and provide not only step-by-step guidance through the permitting and renewal processes\, but also information on choosing a farm site\, resources for growers\, and an overview of governance of aquaculture in Alaska. \nHosted by Alaska Sea Grant\, join NOAA Fisheries Alaska Region Aquaculture Coordinator Alicia Bishop for a webinar that goes over how to use the new permitting portal and guidance document when submitting new aquatic farm applications or lease and permit renewals. \nRegister now

SUMMARY:2021 Alaska Young Fishermen's Summit online
DESCRIPTION:The 2021 AYFS agenda containing links to the presentations given during the summit is available. \nAYFS is designed to provide training\, information and networking opportunities for commercial fishermen early in their careers. We understand the value of bringing young fishermen together face-to-face and remain committed to our ongoing work to “weave a network of future fishing leaders.”  Offering AYFS online in 2021 is a temporary solution to extraordinary circumstances. Alaska Sea Grant remains committed to providing the best possible educational and networking opportunities. \nThis event will focus on building capacity in the Alaska commercial fishing industry through four evenings of online training. The program will feature industry leaders providing insights on fishing business management\, the fisheries management process\, and the future of Alaska seafood in a changing environment. \nThe event will take place online in the evenings from December 6–9. \n  \nRegistration\nRegister for the summit \n  \n\nAgenda\nThe 2021 AYFS agenda containing links to the presentations given during the summit is available. \n \n\nProgram\n \n  \n  \nTake a look at the 2021 AYFS program (pdf updated 12/3/2021). \n  \n  \n  \n\nKeynote\nMonday\, December 6  •  6pm\nTheresa Peterson \nTheresa Peterson is an active fisherman and a 35-year resident of Kodiak\, Alaska. The family also participates in a variety of subsistence activities around the island and depends on the bounty of fish and wildlife available for food and sustenance. As an advocate for Alaskan fishermen\, Theresa works for the Alaska Marine Conservation Council (AMCC) as their Fisheries Policy Director. \n

SUMMARY:Building community capacity in kelp mariculture site suitability assessments
DESCRIPTION:Alaska has vast untapped habitat ideal for seaweed mariculture. Determining the relative suitability of sites for cultivating kelp is a complex calculation involving many factors of varying importance\, including conflict over area use\, geophysical aspects\, and biological requirements for effective farming. \nJoin Alaska Sea Grant’s mariculture specialist for a 1-hour webinar about a soon-to-be-released Site Assessment Toolkit (SAT) that promises to help current and prospective seaweed farmers more easily evaluate potential sites around Alaska. The presentation will include a demonstration of the SAT and an opportunity to ask questions. \nThis project is a joint effort of the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences\, Alaska Sea Grant\, and the Native Conservancy\, a nonprofit pioneering kelp farming in Prince William Sound and committed to revitalizing Native culture\, habitat\, health and spirituality. \n  \nRegister now \n  \n
