SUMMARY:Investigating Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning: Hands-on Toxin Detection
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will take place October 14\, 15\, 21 and 22\, at 5:30–8:30 pm each day. \n\n\n\nAlaska Sea Grant and Kodiak College are hosting a public education class focused on paralytic shellfish poisoning. The course includes hands-on laboratory investigations and incorporates intermediate lab skills. Students may take the class for college credit with the completion of additional assignments. \n\n\n\nEnrollment is open to anyone in the community 16 and older\, including high school juniors and seniors\, and undergraduate students. Participants under 18 must provide a parental waiver. SUMMARY:Smoked Seafood School for Commercial Operators
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is for seafood processors looking to include value-added products in their commercial operations.  \n\n\n\nA Smoked Seafood School for general enthusiasts\, including Kodiak Island Borough residents\, is planned for January 2026. \n\n\n\nAt this workshop for commercial operators\, seafood scientists at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center will lead lectures and hands-on activities that include the principles of fish smoking\, modern smoke oven operation\, safety of smoked products\, brining\, cold smoking\, hot-smoking\, salmon jerky production and preparation of fish sausage. \n\n\n\nThe workshop will include presentations and demonstrations of food processing equipment by manufacturer representatives. \n\n\n\nMaximum enrollment is 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Workshop dates:October 20\, 22\, 24\, 27 and 29\, 20255:30 pm – 8:00 pm (Alaska time)Online via Zoom \n\n\n\nThis is a five-session online workshop for those considering or currently involved in direct marketing seafood in Alaska. Topics include regulations\, marketing\, business planning\, and quality. Learn how to start or improve an Alaska direct marketing operation from seafood marketing and quality specialists\, regulatory officials\, and experienced direct marketers. \n\n\n\nThe interactive class will be held online via Zoom on the evenings of October 20\, 22\, 24\, 27 and 29. SUMMARY:Seafood HACCP Segment 2 — October 2025
DESCRIPTION:Alaska Sea Grant offers Seafood HACCP Segment 2 practical training via online video conferencing\, conducted at the specified time with a live instructor. \n\n\n\nThe class will cover the principles of HACCP and provide the tools and training to create a seafood HACCP plan. Students will need to register for and complete the Segment 1 training online prior to October 31\, 2025\, through the National Seafood HACCP Alliance for Training and Education. The Segment 1 training has a separate registration and fee. \n\n\n\nYou can register here for your Segment 2 training\, using the button below\, prior to completing Segment 1\, but be sure to complete the Segment 1 training before the date of this Segment 2 training. \n\n\n\nThis course meets the requirement for HACCP Segment 2. Participants will attend this HACCP training live\, using online video conferencing to complete the practical training session. The training will be conducted October 31\, 2025\, from 9 am to 4 pm. \n\n\n\nAll seafood processors in Alaska are required to have an approved Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan. This class prepares the participant to develop this plan. Class size is limited to 20 participants. A basic HACCP certificate issued by the Association of Food and Drug Officials is awarded upon completion of the class. \n\n\n\nThis workshop is free for Kodiak Island Borough residents\, made possible with funding from the Kodiak Island Borough. SUMMARY:Harmful Algal Bloom Workshop - Kodiak
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop will train potential shellfish farmers to monitor for harmful algae\, including Alexandrium catenella\, which causes paralytic shellfish poisoning. Participants will learn net tow techniques\, plankton identification\, and microscope use. Limited microscopes and other supplies to take home may be available upon request.  \n\n\n\nSpace is limited to 10 individuals\, and applications are required. SUMMARY:Better Process Control School — 2026
DESCRIPTION:This three-day class covers acidified foods production and teaches the principles of thermal processing\, equipment requirements\, container closure evaluation\, and record keeping for glass jars and cans. It is designed for retort operators\, quality assurance technicians\, and home canners\, and will be useful for personnel in plants that pack and thermally process low acid foods and acidified foods in hermetically sealed containers. Sanitation principles are discussed in detail. \n\n\n\nThe course addresses both flexible pouch and traditional can retort operations. \n\n\n\nThis class satisfies FDA requirements. Class size is limited to 20 participants\, and attendees will receive a certificate upon successful completion. The registration fee is $510. \n\n\n\nKodiak residents are eligible for scholarships covering registration fees\, thanks to funding from the Kodiak Island Borough. Photo by Lee House.\n\n\n\nThis three-day workshop will provide an introduction to the early life stages of oysters\, including the techniques necessary for running a shellfish hatchery for commercial\, research\, or restoration purposes. The training will take place at the OceansAlaska Hatchery in Ketchikan\, and participants will work with hatchery staff and instructors from the University of Alaska Southeast and Alaska Sea Grant on hands-on activities such as oyster spawning\, microalgae counting\, and seed sorting. \n\n\n\nOther topics covered will include: \n\n\n\n\nBasic biology/anatomy including dissection\n\n\n\nMicroalgae production techniques\n\n\n\nSpawning\n\n\n\nLarval rearing\n\n\n\nSeed setting\n\n\n\nSite selection and water quality\n\n\n\nLand-based nursery rearing\n\n\n\nFLUPSY production\n\n\n\n\nSara Ebersole explaining microalgae culture at an Oyster Hatchery Workshop.
