SUMMARY:Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute\, Spring 2020
DESCRIPTION:Do you have an employee who\, with key training\, could help lead your business into the future? The Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute (ASPLI) offers 80-hours of intensive professional development for employees recognized as having potential to move up in your company. The institute is designed for mid-level managers in a seafood plant—production managers\, QC supervisors\, seafood engineers\, human resources\, and corporate or administrative personnel identified by their employer as having leadership potential. Others who might benefit include practicing direct marketers\, small seafood processors or others closely involved in the seafood industry. ASPLI provides the technical training needed in the seafood industry to master leadership and management skills. \nThe Spring 2020 session is the second of a two-part program. Session 1 of ASPLI will be held November 11–15\, 2019 at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center (a University of Alaska Fairbanks facility) where participants will learn from seafood faculty and local experts. Topics are the science of seafood\, shelf life\, quality and safety of Alaska’s fishery products\, product development\, lean manufacturing\, new technologies\, and seafood marketing. Participants will get hands-on experience in the KSMSC pilot plant\, and local seafood plant managers will offer perspectives on the seafood industry and management. \nAfter the Kodiak session\, ASPLI participants will return to their jobs and work with an in-house mentor to identify and complete a project that has an impact on plant operations. \nThe final ASPLI session will convene in Anchorage\, March 2–6\, 2020\, focused on leadership training\, project management\, human resources\, regulatory environment\, and developing effective management styles. Experienced seafood leaders\, government regulators\, and management consultants will lead the classes. The goal is to develop confidence\, skills\, and the big-picture understanding needed by tomorrow’s managers. \nSee updated 2020 ASPLI spring session agenda (subject to change). \nThe fee for this program is $2\,200 per person. Employers will be responsible for lodging and airfare to and from the training sites. University of Alaska Fairbanks vocational training funds will offset the cost of ASPLI\, estimated to be a $6\,000 per person training program. \nIf you have an employee who would benefit from ASPLI and you wish to be a sponsor\, direct the prospective ASPLI participant to fill out and submit an online application (https://seagrant.uaf.edu/events/aspli/2019/apply.php). Applications are due by September 15\, 2019. The applicant will be notified of acceptance no later than September 30\, and payment will be due October 7. \nIf you have questions\, please contact \n\nQuentin Fong\, Seafood Marketing Specialist\, 907-486-1516\, qsfong@alaska.edu\nChris Sannito\, Seafood Technology Specialist\, 907-486-1535\, csannito@alaska.edu

SUMMARY:Socially Distant and Locally Sourced: Selling Your Seafood Dockside
DESCRIPTION:The recording of the webinar is now available\, below. \n\nAre you considering alternative markets for your commercial catch in this period of social distancing? Increased interest in buying foods directly from the producer and other market changes caused by COVID-19 may present new opportunities for fishermen. \nJoin seafood and marketing experts from Alaska Sea Grant for a free lunchtime webinar for commercial fishermen\, covering the basics of one methods of reaching consumers directly: dockside sales. Simpler than some other forms of direct marketing\, dockside sales still require know-how and planning. \nWe’ll look at permits and what they cover\, marketing tips\, seafood quality and safety\, and issues specific to our current pandemic. \nAlaska Sea Grant published the first version of the Alaska Direct Marketing Manual in 1997 and has been supporting and informing direct marketers ever since. Join us for an online presentation and discussion with our experts from around the state.

SUMMARY:Alaska Aquaculture Opportunity Areas information session
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an information session to learn more about designating Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs)\, and how you can help identify potential areas within Alaska that will become a focus for commercial aquaculture development. Registration for the information session is required. \nWith the help of stakeholder input\, NOAA will select 10 geographic regions nationwide. Once selected\, NOAA will use a combination of spatial mapping\, scientific review\, and additional public engagement to identify areas within the geographic regions for siting AOAs that are the most environmentally\, socially\, and economically appropriate for commercial aquaculture. This rigorous and collaborative analysis will identify areas where aquaculture projects are most likely to thrive. \nStakeholder input will be an important part of the selection process. This information session will prepare you to better understand and influence which areas may receive future AOA designation. We’ll share information about the AOA process\, benefits\, and concerns\, and take questions. \nIf you’re interested in reviewing NOAA’s AOA information prior to this information session\, visit Aquaculture Opportunity Areas | NOAA Fisheries. We look forward to seeing you. \nRegister now \n\nWhat is an AOA?\nAOAs are called for in the May 2020 Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth. They are defined as geographic areas (state waters\, federal waters\, or a combination of both) that have been evaluated for their potential for sustainable commercial aquaculture. Selected areas are expected to support multiple aquaculture farm sites of varying types including finfish\, shellfish\, and/or seaweed. In Alaska\, finfish farming is banned in state waters per Alaska Statute 16.40.210. Thus\, AOAs for state waters would apply to aquaculture operations for seaweed\, shellfish\, and/or other pertinent species. \nThis information meeting may be recorded and shared for informational purposes\, and may incidentally include participant names\, faces\, comments\, and questions. \nPlease email Dawn Montano to be added to the aquaculture announcements list.

Last year KAMSS was canceled due to COVID-19. This year we are happy to come together in April 2021 through our virtual event. KAMSS 2021 will be the 4th regional symposium that connects the Kodiak community to the marine science research around them. \nHosted by the Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program with support from regional partners and contributors\, KAMSS provides a forum for researchers to share findings within the research community and to the general public. The symposium offers opportunity for stakeholders to engage and understand how Kodiak’s marine environment and resources function\, change\, and affect our lives and livelihoods and offers a venue for researchers to plan for integrated\, cooperative and community-inspired marine research. \nPatterned after the preceding symposiums\, KAMSS 2021 oral and poster presentations will span a variety of marine science and related fields pertinent to our healthy coastal  community. Sessions will be organized thematically and delivered over the course of the week via Zoom. The sessions will be based on abstracts submitted for KAMSS 2020. \nDetails from previous KAMSS events\, including links to the programs and abstracts\, can be viewed by visiting KAMSS 2017. \nKeynote\nDr. Steven Barbeaux \nMonday\, April 19  •  6pm\nDr. Steven Barbeaux\nHeatwave impacts on the Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod \nPacific cod has been an important food and economic resource in Alaska for millennia. The population declined through the mid-2000s\, however a series of high recruitments starting in 2006 helped the stock recover. In the beginning of 2014\, the future for Pacific cod in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) looked bright\, with the fishery earning on average $103 million. From 2014–2016\, an unprecedented warming event triggered changes in the GOA ecosystem\, and continued declines resulted in the closure of the fishery in 2020. This talk will describe how changes in the ecosystem during the heatwave affected the GOA Pacific cod stock and how this stock may fair in a warming world. \nA graduate of the University of Washington School of Fisheries\, Dr. Barbeaux works as a research fisheries biologist at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in Seattle\, and is the lead stock assessment author for the Gulf of Alaska Pacific cod stock. Steve was raised in a fishing family on the Great Lakes\, and still has close family fishing there. He began his career with NOAA as a contracted fisheries observer in Alaska in 1996\, and has been employed as a research fisheries biologist with the Status of Stocks and Multispecies Assessment Program since 2002. \nCall for abstracts\nKAMSS 2021 will feature presentations submitted under the 2020 Call for Abstracts. \nSteering committee\n\nJulie Matweyou (chair)\, University of Alaska Fairbanks\, Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program\, Kodiak\nJulie Bonney\, Alaska Groundfish Data Bank\, Kodiak\nRobin Corcoran\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge\, Kodiak\nBrian Himelbloom\, University of Alaska Fairbanks (retired)\, Kodiak\nTyler Kornelis\, Kodiak Area Native Association\, Kodiak\nMike Litzow\, NOAA Fisheries\, Alaska Fisheries Science Center\, Kodiak\nJo Ellen Lottsfeldt\, Resident and MA student through Miami University\, Kodiak-Anchorage\nMolly Odell\, Alutiiq Museum\, Kodiak\nTheresa Peterson\, Alaska Marine Conservation Council\, Kodiak\nNick Sagalkin\, Alaska Department of Fish and Game\, Kodiak\nCindy Trussell\, University of Alaska Anchorage\, Kodiak College\, Kodiak\nMatthew Van Daele\, Sun’aq Tribe of Kodiak\, Kodiak\nNathan Weber\, Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association\, Kodiak
