SUMMARY:Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute\, Fall 2019
DESCRIPTION:Application deadline has been extended to October 10\, 2019. \nDo you have an employee who\, with key training\, could help lead your business into the future? The Alaska Seafood Processing Leadership Institute (ASPLI) offers 80-hours of intensive professional development for employees recognized as having potential to move up in your company. The institute is designed for mid-level managers in a seafood plant—production managers\, QC supervisors\, seafood engineers\, human resources\, and corporate or administrative personnel identified by their employer as having leadership potential. Others who might benefit include direct marketers\, small seafood processors or others closely involved in the seafood industry. ASPLI provides the technical training needed in the seafood industry to master leadership and management skills. \nSession 1 of ASPLI begins November 11–15\, 2019 at the UAF Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center\, where participants will learn from seafood faculty and local experts. Topics include the science of seafood\, shelf life\, quality and safety of Alaska’s fishery products\, product development\, lean manufacturing\, new technologies\, and seafood marketing. Participants will get hands-on experience in the KSMSC pilot plant\, and local seafood plant managers will offer perspectives on the seafood industry and management. \nSee sample ASPLI fall session agenda. (Schedule and sessions from previous event\, and are subject to change.) \nAfter the Kodiak session\, ASPLI participants will return to their jobs and work with an in-house mentor to identify and complete a project that has an impact on plant operations. \nThe final ASPLI session will convene in Anchorage\, March 2–6\, 2020\, focused on leadership training\, project management\, human resources\, regulatory environment\, and developing effective management styles. Experienced seafood leaders\, government regulators\, and management consultants will lead the classes. The goal is to develop confidence\, skills\, and the big-picture understanding needed by tomorrow’s managers. \nThe fee for this program is $2\,200 per person. Employers will be responsible for lodging and airfare to and from the training sites. University of Alaska Fairbanks vocational training funds will offset the cost of ASPLI\, estimated to be a $6\,000 per person training program. \nIf you have an employee who would benefit from ASPLI and you wish to be a sponsor\, direct the prospective ASPLI participant to fill out and submit an online application (https://seagrant.uaf.edu/events/aspli/2019/apply.php). Applications are due by October 10\, 2019. The applicant will be notified of acceptance no later than September 30\, and payment will be due October 7. \nIf you have questions\, please contact \n\nQuentin Fong\, Seafood Marketing Specialist\, 907-486-1516\, qsfong@alaska.edu\nChris Sannito\, Seafood Technology Specialist\, 907-486-1535\, csannito@alaska.edu

SUMMARY:Setting Priorities for Health\, Social\, and Economic Disruptions from Spills in Alaska: Learning from the Past\, Preparing for the Future
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is part of a national series sponsored by the Sea Grant Oil Spill Science Outreach Program to improve community preparedness for oil spills. This collaboration of the of the Gulf Research Program of the National Academies of Sciences\, Engineering\, and Medicine; Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative; and Sea Grant programs around the country will feature workshops focused on three broadly defined topical areas pertaining to oil spills: public health\, social disruption\, and economic impacts. The aim of the project is to identify regional-level needs and priorities for improving preparedness. This project follows up on a 2017 workshop sponsored by the Gulf Research Program that brought together oil spill and public health practitioners\, the disaster research community\, and leaders from communities affected by oil spills. The workshop in Alaska will focus on the topics of public health and social and economic disruption from spills in three parts: \n\nresearch and lessons learned from the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill\,\nthe current state of oil spill preparedness in Alaska\, and\nhow to prepare communities for the next technological disaster.\n\nThe workshop agenda is now available (updated 2/13/2019). \nSpace is limited\, and online registration is required.

SUMMARY:2018 Copper River Delta Science Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Update April 13\, 2018: Presentation files are available for viewing and download. \nAlaska’s Copper River delta is the largest contiguous wetland on the Pacific Coast of North America and an important region for both fish and wildlife. The delta provides vital salmon habitat\, serves as a key shorebird stopover and breeding site\, and is the primary nesting area for Dusky Canada Geese. \nTo better integrate current knowledge and plan future research efforts\, Copper River Delta Science Symposium presentations will focus on the delta as a system\, covering topics from hydrology and geomorphology to avian nesting ecology and trophic relationships. This conference will provide an opportunity for interdisciplinary examination of the delta and to identify future research needs to better manage and conserve this ecologically significant area in the face of climate change and other environmental transformations. \nBackground\nThe Copper River delta has a long and rich research history based on its many ecological\, biological and physical systems. Thirteen delta research conferences have been held\, beginning in the early 1970s. The US Forest Service’s Cordova Ranger District and Pacific Northwest Research Station\, Ecotrust and Alaska Sea Grant supported the most recent conference in 2011. Since that year many research projects have come to fruition\, new initiatives have been put in place and many issues have come to the fore including climate change impacts. \nAgenda and Abstracts\nThe Agenda is available for download (2-page PDF). Or download the full Agenda and Abstracts (44-page PDF). Please note the welcome reception the evening of March 27\, and a public poster session the evening of March 28\, both at the Cordova Center. \nDr. Gordon Reeves\, USFS\, Corvallis\, OR \nKeynote Speaker\nThe keynote speaker is Dr. Gordon Reeves\, USFS\, Corvallis\, Oregon. Gordie Reeves first set foot on the Copper River delta as a fisheries biologist in 1987. His expertise is in freshwater ecology of anadromous salmon and trout\, conservation biology of those fish\, the impacts of climate change on aquatic ecosystems and associated biota\, and aquatic aspects of landscape ecology. \nRegistration\nRegistration deadline is March 16—our caterers need firm numbers to accommodate timely food ordering. Symposium registration is $75 US and covers daily continental breakfast\, lunch\, receptions and break refreshments. \nInstructions for Presenters\nGuidelines for both oral and poster presentations are downloadable. \nLocation and Facilities\nThe symposium will be held at the new Cordova Center co-located with Cordova’s library\, city offices and museum. Cordova is nearly in sync digitally with the outside world—most hotels have wireless\, and major cell phone carriers including GCI\, ACS\, Verizon and AT&T are worth a try. \nCordova housing options include the Reluctant Fisherman Inn\, Prince William Motel\, Lighthouse Inn\, and many B&Bs. We have an airport shuttle (the airport is 13 miles one-way)\, and a car rental. USFS will provide some airport shuttles. \nVisitor Information\nFor information on hotels\, B&Bs\, restaurants\, museums\, sightseeing opportunities and attractions\, and car rental please visit the Cordova Chamber website. \nSteering Committee\nTorie Baker (co-chair) Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program\, University of Alaska Fairbanks\nErin Cooper (co-chair) Cordova Ranger District\, USFS\nStormy Haught Alaska Department of Fish and Game\nRob Campbell Prince William Sound Science Center\nJohn Whissel Native Village of Eyack\nChantel Adelfio Copper River Watershed Project\nMelissa Gabrielson Cordova Ranger District\, USFS \nSponsors\nAlaska Sea Grant College Program\nCordova District\, US Forest Service\nPacific Northwest Research Station\, US Forest Service\nPrince William Sound Science Center\nCopper River Watershed Project\nOil Spill Recovery Institute
