SUMMARY:Sea Grant fellowship opportunities and experiences
DESCRIPTION:Alaska Sea Grant director Ginny Eckert will provide an overview and take questions about upcoming Alaska Sea Grant fellowship opportunities for graduate students\, including the Knauss Fellowship and Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship. Prospective applicants can hear first-hand accounts from recent fellows about their experiences and ask questions. \nThe Sea Grant Knauss Fellowship provides a unique educational and professional experience to graduate students who have an interest in ocean\, coastal and Great Lakes resources and in the national policy decisions affecting those resources. The fellowship\, named after one of Sea Grant’s founders and former NOAA Administrator John A. Knauss\, matches highly qualified graduate students with “hosts” in the legislative and executive branch of government located in the Washington\, D.C. area\, for a one year paid fellowship. \nThe Alaska Sea Grant State Fellowship program  provides an opportunity to acquire on-the-job experience in the planning and implementation of marine resource policies and programs in Alaska. The program matches highly motivated graduate students and recent graduates with hosts in Alaska-based organizations for a 12-month paid fellowship. \nPresenters:\nGinny Eckert\, Alaska Sea Grant Director\nMaya Becker\, Sea Grant Knauss Fellow in Senator Murkowski’s office\nTav Ammu\, Alaska Sea Grant State Fellow\, Clean Harbors program \nUse the link below to register for the seminar series. SUMMARY:Building community capacity in kelp mariculture site suitability assessments
DESCRIPTION:Alaska has vast untapped habitat ideal for seaweed mariculture. Determining the relative suitability of sites for cultivating kelp is a complex calculation involving many factors of varying importance\, including conflict over area use\, geophysical aspects\, and biological requirements for effective farming. \nJoin Alaska Sea Grant’s mariculture specialist for a 1-hour webinar about a soon-to-be-released Site Assessment Toolkit (SAT) that promises to help current and prospective seaweed farmers more easily evaluate potential sites around Alaska. The presentation will include a demonstration of the SAT and an opportunity to ask questions. \nThis project is a joint effort of the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences\, Alaska Sea Grant\, and the Native Conservancy\, a nonprofit pioneering kelp farming in Prince William Sound and committed to revitalizing Native culture\, habitat\, health and spirituality. \n  \nRegister now \n  \n

SUMMARY:Seaweed Farm Start-up Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Alaska Sea Grant and partners are excited to announce the 2021 Seaweed Farm Start-up Training Program to be held for Alaska residents interested in starting their own seaweed farm in Alaska. In 2020\, this program was held in Kodiak\, Ketchikan\, and Sitka as part of Phase 2 of the Alaska Mariculture Initiative. In February of 2021\, this program will be held again for a new cohort of participants\, and will be conducted online via Zoom due to COVID-19 health and safety mandates. This virtual format will allow more participants to access the training program\, from 48 participants in 2020 to potentially more than 100 in 2021. Registration for the training program will be completed in two parts: \n\nAll interested Alaska residents are invited to register for a 2-hour webinar to be held at 4:00 pm on February 2\, 2021. Each session will be 2–3 hours.\n\nThe goal of this program is to provide the tools and training necessary for Alaskans to start their own seaweed farm. The program is targeted towards commercial fishermen\, Alaska Natives\, and fishing communities. The program will be completed in four sections: \n\nonline webinar on February 2\, 2021\nseries of virtual technical multi-day workshops over one-week beginning on February 22\, 2021\none-on-one mentoring for high-performing participants\npotential in-person hands-on field training in Spring/Summer 2021 (COVID-19 permitting).\n\nParticipants will be required to attend the February 2nd webinar in order to register for the series of technical workshops. SUMMARY:Alaska Aquaculture Opportunity Areas information session
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an information session to learn more about designating Aquaculture Opportunity Areas (AOAs)\, and how you can help identify potential areas within Alaska that will become a focus for commercial aquaculture development. Registration for the information session is required. \nWith the help of stakeholder input\, NOAA will select 10 geographic regions nationwide. Once selected\, NOAA will use a combination of spatial mapping\, scientific review\, and additional public engagement to identify areas within the geographic regions for siting AOAs that are the most environmentally\, socially\, and economically appropriate for commercial aquaculture. This rigorous and collaborative analysis will identify areas where aquaculture projects are most likely to thrive. \nStakeholder input will be an important part of the selection process. This information session will prepare you to better understand and influence which areas may receive future AOA designation. We’ll share information about the AOA process\, benefits\, and concerns\, and take questions. \nIf you’re interested in reviewing NOAA’s AOA information prior to this information session\, visit Aquaculture Opportunity Areas | NOAA Fisheries. We look forward to seeing you. \nRegister now \n\nWhat is an AOA?\nAOAs are called for in the May 2020 Executive Order on Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth. They are defined as geographic areas (state waters\, federal waters\, or a combination of both) that have been evaluated for their potential for sustainable commercial aquaculture. Selected areas are expected to support multiple aquaculture farm sites of varying types including finfish\, shellfish\, and/or seaweed. In Alaska\, finfish farming is banned in state waters per Alaska Statute 16.40.210. Thus\, AOAs for state waters would apply to aquaculture operations for seaweed\, shellfish\, and/or other pertinent species. \nThis information meeting may be recorded and shared for informational purposes\, and may incidentally include participant names\, faces\, comments\, and questions. \nPlease email Dawn Montano to be added to the aquaculture announcements list.

SUMMARY:Socially Distant and Locally Sourced: Selling Your Seafood Dockside
DESCRIPTION:The recording of the webinar is now available\, below. \n\nAre you considering alternative markets for your commercial catch in this period of social distancing? Increased interest in buying foods directly from the producer and other market changes caused by COVID-19 may present new opportunities for fishermen. \nJoin seafood and marketing experts from Alaska Sea Grant for a free lunchtime webinar for commercial fishermen\, covering the basics of one methods of reaching consumers directly: dockside sales. Simpler than some other forms of direct marketing\, dockside sales still require know-how and planning. \nWe’ll look at permits and what they cover\, marketing tips\, seafood quality and safety\, and issues specific to our current pandemic. \nAlaska Sea Grant published the first version of the Alaska Direct Marketing Manual in 1997 and has been supporting and informing direct marketers ever since. Join us for an online presentation and discussion with our experts from around the state.
