SUMMARY:Alaska Seaweed Handling and Processing Workshop: Kelp Stabilization Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:  \nAlaska Sea Grant and GreenWave invite kelp farmers\, processors and industry members to apply to participate in a free one-day demonstration of primary processing and stabilization technology for raw kelp. \nFresh seaweed degrades rapidly after harvesting\, inhibiting farmers and processors from bringing a quality product to market in sufficient quantity. To solve this problem\, Alaska Sea Grant\, GreenWave\, Macro Oceans\, Kodiak Archipelago Leadership Institute and Alaska Ocean Farms have partnered to develop an open-source primary processing line capable of stabilizing kelp at ambient temperature as close to the farm as possible. If successful\, this technology could be deployed in rural communities across Alaska\, allowing remote kelp farms to extend the shelf life of their product and secure access to markets. \nThe demonstration will cover the design and operation of a processing line built to transform whole\, wet\, freshly harvested kelp into an intermediate chopped format to allow for easier handling and stabilization via reagents\, fermentation or drying. Macro Oceans will provide stabilization reagents to be homogenized with the chopped kelp\, and the end product will then be shipped to Macro Oceans’ facility in California to be monitored for stability. \nThe results from this trial will be made public\, and project partners will make the processing line design and operating parameters freely available for the benefit of all Alaskans\, particularly rural and Indigenous communities. \nTravel funding is available. Priority will be given to Alaska residents\, members of rural and Indigenous communities\, and active kelp farmers. \nApplications must be received by February 29. \nFor questions\, contact Melissa Good. \nThis demonstration is funded as part of an Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation Joint Innovation Grant. Project partners include Alaska Sea Grant\, GreenWave\, Macro Oceans\, Kodiak Archipelago Leadership Institute\, and Alaska Ocean Farms. Read the full project proposal here. \nApproved applicants will be notified by March 7. \nGo to application \n

SUMMARY:Alaska Seaweed Genetics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nThe 2024 Alaska Seaweed Genetics Workshop presentation slides are now linked in agenda. (Please note\, not all slides are available.)\nOn behalf of Alaska Sea Grant\, the Alaska Fisheries Development Foundation\, and the Alaska Mariculture Research and Training Center\, we would like to invite you to the Alaska Seaweed Genetics Workshop in Juneau\, Alaska\, April 1–2. Be a part of the conversation among scientists and the mariculture industry as we illuminate areas of research to support the sustainable management of seaweed aquaculture. \nAs a precaution to protect genetic diversity in seaweed populations\, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has created the 50–50 Rule for the state of Alaska that mandates that collected sorus tissue for mariculture operations must be collected from more than 50 parent individuals from within 50 km of the outplanting site. With these rules in place and only a few kelp hatcheries in the state\, it can be temporally and economically costly to grow seaweed in Alaska. Fifty kilometers is small when Alaska has roughly 76\,000 kilometers of coastline—more than California\, Oregon\, and Washington combined. Alaska has received significant funding to grow from a $1 million to a $100 million industry in the next 20 years\, so how do we move forward while still preserving genetic diversity? \nOur goal is to facilitate a conversation with scientists and managers inside and outside Alaska to learn how other regions address these challenges. We hope to synthesize the state of knowledge to inform management practices that can support industry growth without harming wild stocks. \nThe conference will be held at the Centennial Hall and Convention Center in Juneau\, Alaska. The Baranof by Best Western Downtown Juneau has kindly provided a discounted room rate for the days of the workshop. Please use the link below to reserve your room. The last day to book with the link to guarantee this group rate is March 1\, 2024. \nhttps://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotel-rooms.02019.html?groupId=2Z6VV2C8 \nNote to event speakers\, presenters and panelists: The event sessions on April 1–2 may be recorded and shared online to educate those unable to attend. \nRegistration\nThe registration fee for the Alaska Seaweed Genetics Workshop is $50. The fee is waived for students\, speakers\, and current Alaskan farmers/processor\, by entering the registration code SGW24. (Registration deadline is Tuesday\, March 26\, 2024.) \nAgenda (link to pdf)                               Abstracts (link to pdf) \n                  \n  \n\nContact \nAlaska Seaweed Genetics Workshop: contact Jessica Whitney\nAlaska Sea Grant Mariculture Specialist: contact Melissa Good\nAlaska Fisheries Development Foundation: contact Hannah Wilson \n\nAlaska Sea Grant accommodation and code of conduct\nAlaska Sea Grant is committed to providing safe and welcoming environments for all who participate in activities\, meetings\, or events. SUMMARY:Beginning kelp farmer business planning\, marketing and processing
DESCRIPTION:  \nAlaska Sea Grant\, in partnership with the Kodiak Archipelago Leadership Institute and Alaska Ocean Farms\, is hosting an in-person workshop October 30 and 31 at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center. \nDuring this two-day workshop we will focus on kelp farms currently permitted or pending in the Kodiak archipelago\, with maps that show location and ownership. This information will support a regional strategy session on increasing the number of kelp farm permits issued to rural and Alaska native residents in the region. \nThe first day of the workshop will cover kelp farm capital and operating costs to assist in developing a start-up and operating budget. This information will be used to demonstrate how to calculate your farm’s break-even price-per-pound. Information will also be provided on potential access to capital opportunities. \nThe second day will concentrate on marketing and processing\, with an overview of processing methods currently being used in Alaska\, and some fun hands-on learning stations in the afternoon. \nWe encourage both Tribal and Alaska Native Corporation leadership to participate alongside the Kodiak region’s beginning rural and Alaska Native kelp farmers. The more we learn together as leaders and farmers the more we can continue to build our regional community around kelp. \nMaterials for activities will be provided and lunches included. Space is limited to 20 participants\, selected based upon applicant review. Scholarships are available upon request. \nAll interested persons requesting travel assistance must submit a brief application by October 11. If you are not applying for travel assistance\, your application must be received by October 16. \nIf you have questions about the workshop\, travel assistance\, or the application\, please contact Melissa Good. \nApply now

SUMMARY:Building community capacity in kelp mariculture site suitability assessments
DESCRIPTION:Alaska has vast untapped habitat ideal for seaweed mariculture. Determining the relative suitability of sites for cultivating kelp is a complex calculation involving many factors of varying importance\, including conflict over area use\, geophysical aspects\, and biological requirements for effective farming. \nJoin Alaska Sea Grant’s mariculture specialist for a 1-hour webinar about a soon-to-be-released Site Assessment Toolkit (SAT) that promises to help current and prospective seaweed farmers more easily evaluate potential sites around Alaska. The presentation will include a demonstration of the SAT and an opportunity to ask questions. \nThis project is a joint effort of the UAF College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences\, Alaska Sea Grant\, and the Native Conservancy\, a nonprofit pioneering kelp farming in Prince William Sound and committed to revitalizing Native culture\, habitat\, health and spirituality. \n  \nRegister now \n  \n
