SUMMARY:PADI Open Water Diver Course for Mariculturists
DESCRIPTION:9:00 am — 5:00 pm each day \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAlaska Sea Grant is now accepting applications for a PADI Open Water Diver certification course designed for individuals working in or preparing to enter Alaska’s mariculture industry. \n\n\n\nBefore arriving in Kodiak\, participants will complete the required PADI online coursework independently. A link to the course materials will be provided upon acceptance. Participants must finish all online coursework before the in-person training begins. \n\n\n\nThe in-person portion of the course will include: \n\n\n\n\nConfined-water skill development in a pool\n\n\n\nProper use of scuba equipment\n\n\n\nDiving safety and emergency procedures\n\n\n\nOpen-water training dives in Kodiak\n\n\n\nPractical skills relevant to working safely in and around mariculture operations\n\n\n\n\nParticipants who successfully complete the online coursework\, confined-water sessions\, and required open-water dives will earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, and an application is required. Priority will be given to Alaska residents who are actively involved in mariculture or whose work would benefit from scuba certification. Applicants should be comfortable in the water and able to meet PADI’s medical and swimming requirements.  \n\n\n\nThe course fee is $200 per participant\, and all required diving equipment will be provided. SUMMARY:Kodiak Kelp Nursery Workshop 2026

Photo by Melissa Good/Alaska Sea Grant.\n\n\n\nAlaska Sea Grant is now accepting applications for a three-day\, hands-on kelp nursery workshop in partnership with GreenWave. The training will be held at the Kodiak Seafood and Marine Science Center utilizing the GreenWave containerized kelp nursery. \n\n\n\nDesigned for current and prospective nursery technicians\, kelp farmers\, nursery operators and others working in mariculture\, the workshop will introduce participants to the equipment\, techniques and biological principles involved in producing seeded line for kelp farming. \n\n\n\nTopics will include: \n\n\n\n\nKelp biology and reproductive cycles\n\n\n\nCollection and preparation of reproductive tissue\n\n\n\nNursery equipment\, setup and sanitation\n\n\n\nSpore release and seeded-line inoculation\n\n\n\nNursery culture and maintenance\n\n\n\nMonitoring seeded line and troubleshooting common challenges\n\n\n\nPreparing seeded line for transfer and deployment at a farm site\n\n\n\n\nParticipants will gain practical experience working in a functioning containerized nursery and learn approaches that can be adapted for kelp production in Alaska. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited and participation is by application. The workshop fee is $50.
