SUMMARY:Business of Fishing workshop - Kodiak 2023
DESCRIPTION:The Alaska Sea Grant Business of Fishing workshop is a new one-day class offering commercial fishing business training in coastal communities around the state. It is designed for boat owners\, permit holders and fishermen looking to upgrade their fishing operations and improve their financial management skills. \nThe workshop covers a range of topics in business and finance important for fishing operations\, including tax strategy and organization\, business and financial planning\, and risk management. \nThis training grew out of the success from the Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit (AYFS) business session. The Business of Fishing workshop expands on the AYFS training and brings it directly to fishermen in their hometowns. \nThis workshop will be held in Kodiak on March 15\, from 9:00 to 4:00 at Fishermen’s Hall. \nFree advance registration is required\, and lunch is provided. SUMMARY:Training Alaska’s New Commercial Fishery Entrants: statewide strategy session
DESCRIPTION:This is a hybrid event\, offered online and in-person. \nAlaska Sea Grant is continuing its project to understand the training needs of new entrants into commercial fisheries in Alaska. We are wrapping up the assessment portion of this project and are moving toward implementation\, beginning with a strategy session among educators and training organizations serving new entrants. The strategy session will discuss the findings from our needs assessment and form strategies to meet these needs. \nWe will host this conversation virtually and in-person on September 30. Attendees can join us at the Alaska Sea Grant office conference room in Anchorage\, or online through Zoom. Registration is required for both in-person and online participation. In-person space is limited\, so if you plan to join us in Anchorage\, please register now. Zoom attendees will be sent a meeting link on September 28. SUMMARY:COVID-19 webinar: Federal and State guidance and mandates for the Alaskan commercial fishing and seafood processing industries
DESCRIPTION:As Alaska gears up for another fishing season in the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\, Alaska Sea Grant is assisting seafood processors and commercial fishing operations with accessing and understanding current safety operations guidance and mandates. \nThis webinar will feature presentations from the CDC/NIOSH\, the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services\, and the State of Alaska COVID-19 Unified Command. The event will include the most up-to-date science and guidelines\, which have changed since the summer of 2020. \nCDC/NIOSH will present current guidance for land-based seafood processors. Topics addressed will include  \n\nreview of the CDC’s federal guidelines related to workplace safety\nclose-contact workplace safety and how to remain safe when you must work less than 6 feet apart\ncontrol measures such as elimination\, engineering\, work policies/procedures\, vaccinations\, and the proper use of PPE\nthe science of vaccines and why vaccinations are important for people who are working in close quarters who can’t socially distance\n\nThe Department of Health and Social Services\, and State of Alaska COVID-19 Unified Command will focus their presentations on workplace measures to promote safety\, vaccine availability\, how to schedule an appointment to receive a vaccine in Alaska\, and any current statewide health or travel mandates. State mandates and vaccine availability have changed since the summer of 2020. \nRegistration is required to attend the webinar. \nThere will be limited time for questions at the end of the webinar. Registrants are encouraged to submit questions in advance during the registration process. Increased interest in buying foods directly from the producer and other market changes caused by COVID-19 may present new opportunities for fishermen. \nJoin seafood and marketing experts from Alaska Sea Grant for a free lunchtime webinar for commercial fishermen\, covering the basics of one methods of reaching consumers directly: dockside sales. Simpler than some other forms of direct marketing\, dockside sales still require know-how and planning. \nWe’ll look at permits and what they cover\, marketing tips\, seafood quality and safety\, and issues specific to our current pandemic. \nAlaska Sea Grant published the first version of the Alaska Direct Marketing Manual in 1997 and has been supporting and informing direct marketers ever since. SUMMARY:2020 Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 AYFS agenda containing links to the presentations given during the summit is available. \nThe Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory Program presented the 8th Alaska Young Fishermen’s Summit in Juneau\, Alaska. AYFS provides training\, information and networking opportunities for commercial fishermen early in their careers. \nThe summit focused on building leadership and networking capacity in the Alaska commercial fishing industry during three days of intensive training. The fast-paced program featured industry leaders providing insights on fishing business management\, the fisheries management process\, and the role of Alaska seafood in the global marketplace. This year\, the summit was timed to coincide with the start of the Alaska State Legislature regular session in Juneau. \nRegistration\nThe full registration fee of $200 ($225 after January 7\, 2020) is discounted $50 if you are an Alaska commercial fisherman\, thanks to support from Alaska Sea Grant and our summit sponsors. \nThe early registration fee for Alaska commercial fishermen was $150 through January 7\, or $175 after January 7. SUMMARY:Introduction to Starting and Operating a Seafood Direct Marketing Business 2018
DESCRIPTION:Online distance delivery \nThis introductory course presents content on the development and management of a successful seafood direct marketing business from inception to operation. The practical application of business planning\, obtaining financing\, permitting\, feasibility analysis\, marketing\, and operational aspects of a seafood direct marketing business will be introduced. \nThe course will be delivered online\, primarily by lectures and class discussions\, supported by four homework assignments that are individualized to assist you in developing an action plan for your business. \nAt the end of the course\, the student will understand and be able to use the appropriate managerial and decision-making tools that are needed to start and run a seafood direct marketing business. \nThe course is designed for commercial fishermen with little or no experience in direct marketing\, who want to onboard or custom process and direct market their catch in various ways.
